Founded in 1992, the PREMIER LEAGUE consists of 20 clubs, each playing every other team twice during the season. This gives each club 38 games in a season, which runs from August to May.
Before the formation of the Premier League, English clubs were struggling to compete financially with European clubs and their image was declining on the world stage. The Premier League was created to increase the financial power and competitiveness of English clubs.
Initially, the league was called the First Division and consisted of 20 clubs. The number was increased to 22 for the 1919-20 season and again to 19 in 1992-93, following the withdrawal of Aldershot Town.
